| The fiber frenzy created by the 37th annual Whidbey Weaver's Guild Spin-in has calmed until next year. Held April 5th and 6th at Oak Harbor High School, it was attended by a record 204 participants. They came to shop from 25 vendors, snack on the generous treats shared by our guild members, win fantastic door prizes and a daily raffle basket and experience the always wonderful presence of our presenter, Judith MacKenzie-McCuin.
The weekend was preceded by a full day workshop taught by Judith on April 3rd and again April 4th to a total of 40 participants. The participants learned many spinning techniques and information about creating novelty spinning with silk, bamboo and cashmere. A lunch of wraps was catered by Heidi's Coffee House in Coupeville. During the Spin-in participants were fascinated by Judith's Saturday presentation on Bison and its entry into the fiber world. Her extensive knowledge and first hand experience is always entertaining and informative for anyone lucky enough to hear her. Sunday she shared her spinning skills with the 175 participants by demonstrating to the small "pods" of spinners as well as anyone who wanted to observe. Everyone was then able to practice spinning the lovely fiber packets of Yak, Cashmere, and Bison for the rest of the day as Judith answered individual questions. On Saturday and Sunday Marcy Johnson assisted groups of new spinners in learning the basic of this "hobby" that insulates our houses with FIBER. She helped approximately a dozen more enter the "flock". |
The Spin-in is only as successful as the volunteers who jump in to help. So, a sincere thank you is extended to all that volunteered to help with set-up, check-in, refreshments, door prizes, publicity and clean up. You know who you are, so pat yourself on the back NOW!!!
A special thank you goes to the special volunteers that headed up the committees and really made it HAPPEN. They jumped in, took on any task and were all a pleasure to work with. Nancy planned and executed the publicity, Chris created a postcard that was sent to the data base she coordinated, Janis and Dena kept the world informed through the Guild website and Webster respectively, Anne solicited items for the door prizes and raffle baskets, Rose coordinated all the supply purchasing and refreshments, Linda planned the set-up and clean-up, Lou Ann hosted the workshops and Ann organized the vendors and program. It was wonderful to have Anita join us from Houston, TX as "Mistress of Ceremonies" and to have Mary set the tone with her warm opening remarks.
The Spin-In has had 37 years now of "evolution" and we strive to make it an event that offers a fun experience at a reasonable cost. We value any input that would help us continue to improve- what you enjoy, what improvements we could make and "how to get there". We would also welcome anyone who would like to serve on the planning committee! Please feel free to contact me.
