| Whidbey Weavers Guild's sole objective is to provide for and promote an exchange of ideas for education in the fiber arts. This takes a variety of formats: programs, workshops, informal classes, materials for independent study and assistance with study groups. Two premises are that members share knowledge and techniques with other members and that they volunteer to accomplish the objective.
The Janet Bratz Memorial Grant, for major projects, and study funds, for classes and workshops, are awarded annually by application to pursue any area of fiber art. The Program Chairman arranges lectures or presentations for each monthly meeting. Those presenters come from a wide variety of backgrounds to inspire diverse membership interests. Workshops are just as varied in topics as the programs. The Workshop Chairman and Program Chairman coordinate efforts to bring guest artists and stimulating topics throughout each year. | Recently, the Education Chairman has given a series of basic classes covering drafting, block theory, and structure. Techniques are a common topic. Members are asked to step forward to mentor weavers needing help. Mentoring also is available within the various spinning groups to learners or to those needing help. Dye techniques and workshops are organized and open to anyone.
The Guild library includes a large selection of information covering basic to advanced levels in the fiber arts. There is both an archive of past issues and also current issues of journals. Another well-used resource is a large selection of sample collections. This resource is ever expanding to meet the study objectives of individuals. Additionally, Whidbey Weavers Guild supports the educational activities of other guilds in this region and encourages them to share visiting artists. Workshops in the Guild are open to anyone after enrollment is filled from members. A number of study groups draw members but each group also is open to anyone pursuing the interest of the particular group. These groups are not under the umbrella of the Guild. They nurture in-depth study topics or explore structures or new techniques and provide mentoring. More information can be had through the Study Group link or through the Contact link, citing the specific study group.
