The yearly auction started with members bringing their "white elephants" to the December potluck after we stopped meeting at Bill Dyer's house. It has been our only fundraiser that consistently raises money. Others may or may not do this. We eat gourmet food, visit with friends and bid on future treasurers. Mary Black auctioneer, with Suzanne Ramsey by her side, had us bidding on these goodies even if we didn't need them for many, many years. There are fabulous threads, equipment, woven pieces, handspun, fleeces, garments, (even a jar of picked green beans one year) to mention a few items. Several years we bid on "surprise boxes". It has grown large enough to have a dollar room, several silent auction rooms as well as the live auction pieces. This event continues to raise enough money for us to obtain speakers to further our education in the fiber arts and to provide sufficient Grant and Study Funds. As the membership grew the auction became a hugely successful event with the organizing efforts of Suzanne Dobrin. She volunteered to do this for several years and now Wendy Ferrier is chairman. Mary resigned as auctioneer in 2006 and Suzanne held the gavel in 2007. |
